SITUATION
Known as the gateway to Exmoor, South Molton is a very agreeable market town with a great atmosphere and a wealth of history, with its sheep and cattle markets dating back to the 12th Century and a thriving wool trade centre up until the mid 19th century. Today the town is well known for its growing number of antique shops, fine arts and crafts and local produce and is a popular stop for tourists en route for the wild moor and Lorna Doone country. South Molton has a population of 4,006 and lies to the south west of the Exmoor National Park on the A361 between Tiverton (19 miles) and Barnstaple (11 miles) to the northwest.
